That era of professional basketball was personified by an influx of Black players that not only changed the way the game was played but challenged team ownership to procure higher pay and greater influence. Their efforts paved the way for future players and was integral to the NBA’s meteoric growth.
Theresa Runstedtler is an African American history professor at American University. She is the author of Jack Johnson, Rebel Sojourner: Boxing in the Shadow of the Global Color Line.
