The noted scholar was hired by Thomas Jefferson to survey Washington, DC, in 1791 and would later pen a letter to Jefferson asking him to reflect on his hypocrisy as a slave owner. The author reveals her genealogical connection to Banneker and explores the many others, both Black and white, who share her family lineage.
Rachel Jamison Webster is a creative writing professor at Northwestern University. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including the Yale Review and Tin House.
