Transit Equity Solidarity Day

Baltimore Transit Equity Solidarity Day to Call for Improved Public Transportation
Hero of Montgomery Bus Boycott to join Day of Action and celebration of essential workers who operate, or rely on, public transit in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD – On the 64th anniversary of the victory of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, activists for racial justice and public transportation will convene a virtual rally for Transit Equity Solidarity Day. This December 21 rally celebrates essential workers – many of whom work for our public transit system or rely on it to get to their jobs – and highlights the structural racism and inequities in Baltimore’s public transit system that persist to this day.

Joining Transit Equity Solidarity Day with a recorded message of solidarity will be Ms. Claudette Colvin, the first person arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for refusing to surrender her seat to a white person on public transit. The Montgomery Bus Boycott is still the most iconic example of a victory by Black essential workers and communities of color against racist public transportation policies.

Transit Equity Solidarity Day serves as a call to action to demand policy changes – such as the creation of a regional transit authority -- so that Baltimore public transit will better serve all residents. The Day comes on the heels of two reports detailing the inadequacies of public transit in this City and region. Last week, Central Maryland Transportation Alliance released its annual transit report card, giving Baltimore’s transit system a letter grade of “D” for the fourth straight year; it noted that only 9% of jobs in the Baltimore region can be reached in under an hour via public transit. And last month, the Eno Center for Transportation released a report on Baltimore region transit, stating that the lack of local autonomy in the Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) governance has curtailed the ability of Baltimore to address its racial and economic inequities in transit.
