2nd Annual YOUNG Saturday ‘Visiter’ Awards, Call for Entries Opens May 31 and
due October 31, 2022 (HALLOWEEN!)
Innovative contest invites Maryland high schoolers to join in the fun!
In 1833, Edgar Allan Poe submitted a short story to The Baltimore Saturday Visiter publication and won the competition which helped to launch his career. In celebration of the famous writer’s life, Poe Baltimore and the Baltimore National Heritage Area are holding the 2nd Annual YOUNG Saturday ‘Visiter” Awards (YSVAs), open to Maryland High School Students (grade 9 – 12) or equivalent during the 2022-23 school year). The prizes will honor student media, art, performance, and writing that adapts or is inspired by Poe’s life and works. Submission deadline is October 31, 2022 (HALLOWEEN!), and there is no fee to enter. Visit https://poefestinternational.com/young-sva for details.
Judges for the YSVAs include: Shauntee Daniels, executive director, Baltimore National Heritage Area; Maya Wilson, educator, Baltimore City Schools and Baltimore National Heritage Area; Michael Coleman, board member, Poe Baltimore
Up to three nominees in each category will be notified by December 1. Students and families will be invited to a special ceremony set to take place on January 19, 2023, Edgar Allan Poe’s Birthday at Westminster Hall & Burying Ground, where Poe is buried.
