Whitman@200: A Concert of Music & the Spoken Word composed by Brian Prechtl

This concert features captivating performances by members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a celebration of the life and poetry of Walt Whitman on the 200th Anniversary of Whitman’s birth.

BSO percussionist Brian Prechtl has been composing settings of Whitman’s seminal work, “Leaves of Grass” for the past 10 years. Four of these pieces will be presented in this engaging evening of music and the spoken word. BSO musicians, Jonathan Carney, Dariusz Skoraczewski, Bill Jenkin, Marcia Kämper, Michael Sheppard and Brian Prechtl will be joined by narrators Judith Krummeck, Rafael Alvarez and Wendy Baird.

Whitman is widely considered among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse and was admired by other well known poets and authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Oscar Wilde.  Whitman has been proclaimed by Ezra Pound as “America’s Poet…He is America.”

[When a listener experiences a piece of absolute music, he or she may invent a meaning or program for the music that they are hearing. Likewise when reading a Whitman’s words, one might imagine or impose an environment for the contents of the poetry.  Mating music with the spoken word allows audiences and performers to take a shared journey. This has proven to be an incredibly powerful experience for audiences and performers alike.]

Prechtl’s music has a decidedly American sound characterized by driving rhythm and lyricism that pairs beautifully with Whitman’s iconic American poetry.
