Lunch & Learn: "Maryland: A History"

In celebration of March 25 as Maryland Day, the Maryland Historical Society is hosting a free Brown Bag Lunch & Learn lecture by Jean Russo, co-editor and co-author of the Johns Hopkins Press's “Maryland: A History.” Admission will be free to the MdHS museum, and gallery tours will take place after the lecture.

“Maryland: A History” is beautifully illustrated, with nearly 200 photographs and illustrations, and Ms. Russo will talk about the addition of full-color images in the second version, as well as the range of sources available to provide visual evidence of Maryland’s 400 years of history. The audience will have the opportunity to test their knowledge of Free State history with a short quiz of facts taken from the book. Copies of “Maryland” will be available for purchase.

In “Maryland,” historians recount the stories of struggle and success of early Marylanders and those who followed to reveal how people built modern Maryland. Originally published in 1986, this new edition more fully fleshes out Native American, African American and immigrant history. It also includes completely new content on politics, arts and culture, business and industry, education, the natural environment and the role of women as well as notable leaders in all these fields.

Ms. Russo is a scholar of colonial Chesapeake history employed by the Maryland State Archives and Historic Annapolis. She is also the co-author of “Planting an Empire: The Early Chesapeake in British North America,” and the co-editor of “The Diary of William Faris: The Daily Life of an Annapolis Silversmith.”
