Based on a French comedy by Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian, Mascagni’s L’Amico Fritz tells the story of the stubborn Fritz, a wealthy landowner who disdains marriage. His friend David, a rabbi and persistent matchmaker, challenges him to a wager, betting that the bachelor will cave to marriage.

Enter Suzel, the enchanting daughter of Fritz’s steward. Will Fritz lose his cool and his bet? Or will he let Suzel marry a rival? Fans of Mascagni’s more famous and more frenetic Cavalleria Rusticana will delight in the idyllic charm of this opera, which was first performed in 1872 to rave reviews.
